Riding in Sápmi
Combine horseback riding in Sápmi with getting closer to the Sámi culture. There are ecotourism and Sápmi Experience approved horse riding companies offering experiences year round. It is a great way to absorb nature. No heavy backpacks to carry. Stunning elevated views from the saddle and no risk of slipping. Wildlife is less wary of horse than humans so the tours provide excellent wildlife observation opportunities. For adventurous fishermen it is an ideal transport solution with horses carrying them to rivers and lakes far off the beaten track where no vehicles can travel.
The Sámi have not traditionally used horses but some were part of a reindeer herding project in which they experimented with horses as herding animals. It did not catch on but some Sámi fell in love with the sturdy Icelandic horse and are now using them for riding trips.
