You have not experienced Sápmi if you haven't been to the winter market in Jokkmokk. The first Thursday in February is the opening day of the Jokkmokk Winter Market. This is has been the Sámi tradition for more than 400 years. But from the beginning the market was a cunning method the Swedish king used to gain control over the Sámi and to collect taxes.
The reason the market is in the winter is because it was easier for the Sámi to travel in winter. Snow and frozen lakes make travel easier when there are no roads. In February the Sámi also had the reindeer herds gathered at the winter settlements in the forests nearby.
The Jokkmokk winter market is the most important festive weekend of the year for the Sámi. It is a time to meet friends who gather from all over Sápmi. It is the time one sell handicrafts made during the year and of course, it’s the biggest party of the year.
Art exhibitions, music, theatre performances, Sámi food and much more is what you can experience if you come. Take a chance and you’re sure to get the urge to come back again and again.
We recommend you to take the train to Jokkmokk. Finding accommodation can be tricky so book well in advance. VisitSápmi can also recommend how to find accommodation.
