Sápmi is that Lapland?
Sápmi is our name for the land of the Sámi. Lapland is often promoted as the land of the Sámi. For profit the term has been misused and led to mass tourism and other entrepreneurs simplifying and neglecting true Sámi life and heritage.
Sápmi is the true name of our land and we want you to embrace it as the land stretching from Kola in Russia, over Northern Finland, into Norway and Sweden down 200 kilometers south of Trondheim and Östersund. It is the land where reindeers are found - the ancient reindeer herding land. It is so much more in many ways than Lapland.
We call ourselves Sámi people, a name from our own language. The word lapp or Laplander is considered to be old fashioned at best and racist at worst.
