Tradition and development at the same time

Purse. Southsami design.

Sámi handicraft plays an important role for the Sámi. Duodji (the north Sámi word for handicraft) can show who you are and where you come from. It combines practicality and beauty using traditional materials.

Traditional handicraft knowledge is still taught by one generation to the next in the traditional way. It is very much a living craftsmanship. A lot of Sámi also study at Sámij Åhpadusguovdásj (The Sámi Educational Centre in Jokkmokk) where it is possible to learn handicraft skills.

Sámi Duodji (The Sámi Handicraft Foundation) is promoting duodji. Important for you as a customer and for Sámi traditions is to make sure that you buy handicraft made by a Sámi person. The Sámi Duodji Label is the Foundations way to do this. Look for this symbol when you visit a handicraft shop. It is also possible to meet some craftsmen and women when you come to Sápmi.  See links and don't hesitate to e-mail us for more information.
